This 16-hour course is designed to provide the community police officer with an understanding that one's environment and its relativity to crime prevention strategies is paramount to understanding the basics of human behavior and government interaction. An increase in this basic understanding will prepare the community police officer with an outline of how to utilize available resources. It will also instill the desire to creatively meet the needs commensurate with the myriad of problems facing law enforcement in today's rapidly changing technological society. This training module will provide the community police officer with a basic foundation in code compliance and its relativity to conceptual frameworks, research perspectives, and practical considerations of organizational behavior and management; specifically public organizations and their relation to community interaction and interpretation.

Participants will be able to:

  • Develop an understanding of how one's environment effects behavior and crime
  • Recognize the importance of resource gathering techniques and the implementation of these techniques
  • Work together on practical case study scenarios and make appropriate recommendations to resolve the myriad of issues found in each

  • What is a Livable City: What makes a person feel at home
  • Recognizing Your Resources: The who, what, where, why and how of finding resources
  • Holding Ground: How to recognize and handle physical and psychological deterioration in our communities
  • Develop a Feel for the Environment: Direction on how to find and increase your effectiveness by focusing time and energy on the things and situations you can effectively influence
  • Enhance Your Standing in the Community: The reshaping of apathetic attitudes and promotion of a consensus of community values
  • Monitoring and Evaluation of Objectives: How to recognize the appropriate action steps required to monitor and evaluate the fruits of your labor.
