Sergeant Robert Funderburk began his career
in law enforcement by accepting a position as a civilian accident investigator
(Community Service Officer) with the Hollywood Police Department, remaining
in this position for approximately six years. In 1982, he was accepted
as a police officer for the Miami-Dade Police Department. During his tenure
he has worked in a variety of positions. These include: Uniform Patrol
Officer, Team Police/ COPS Officer, General Investigations Detective,
Uniform Patrol Corporal, Police Operations Sergeant (seaport, transit
system, public hospitals, Internal Affairs Sergeant, Uniform Patrol Sergeant,
and Field Training Sergeant. In 1984, Sgt. Funderburk attended the state
certified “Instructor Training Workshop” which allowed him
to instruct in police related fields to recruits as well as in-service
personnel and began teaching at the Institute of Criminal Justice.
Upon being promoted to sergeant in 1994, he was assigned to a variety
of uniform, administrative, and investigative duties providing him with
a broad base of experience as a supervisor. In 1995, he became a Special
Response Team Negotiator and in 1996 became involved in the development
and teaching of riot control tactics. Sgt. Funderburk taught in the capacity
of a Field Training Sergeant and received his state certification as a
Firearms Instructor. He is currently teaching in-service personnel in
the areas of Weapons of Mass Destruction and Mental Illness and will be
soon instructing mid-level management and command staff members in the
Incident Command System.
