"Since law enforcement agencies began partnering with citizens through community policing, we've seen significant drops in crime rates."
- John Ashcroft

Criminal Justice Academy for Citizens: The Judicial Process

This nine-hour course will be held over three consecutive Saturdays and will provide the community with a detailed account of what happens after a person is arrested. The course will feature two separate cases. The adult case will discuss an arrest on prostitution charges in which the arresting officer finds drugs. This case will take the community through the prostitute's arrest process as well as the "john's" arrest process. The juvenile case will discuss an arrest on auto theft charges. Again, the process for the arrest of a minor also will be discussed in detail.

Over the three-week period, participants will meet those persons directly involved in each case from the arresting officer through the public defender, state attorney, judge, etc. Citizens will find out each step that is taken after an arrest and how outcomes occur. There will be question and answer sessions at the end of each day so the community can speak directly to those involved in the judicial process.

Participants will be able to:

  • Gain a basic understanding of the judicial process
  • Develop an understanding of which government/community agency is responsible for the various steps in the process
  • Learn varying outcomes of cases and how those outcomes are determined
  • Be able to ask generic questions regarding each step of the process
