This highly interactive eight-hour seminar
focuses on the problem solving element of Community Policing. It provides
participants with an understanding of the historical development of the
Community Policing model and the relationship between Problem Oriented
Policing (POP) and Community Oriented Policing (COP). Community Policing
represents a break with more traditional incident-driven policing, allowing
officers to gain the assistance of neighborhood residents to act as partners
in securing public safety. Beyond that, several features distinguish it
from traditional policing and are necessary for its success.
This course is designed for community residents, law enforcement officers,
city employees and social service agency and private sector representatives
who are interested in enhancing their problem solving skills in order
to more effectively address community-police issues.
Participants will be able to:
- Understand that Problem Oriented Policing is a necessary element of
Community Oriented Policing
- Understand how a problem is a basic unit of police work
- Learn the four-stage model known as the "SARA Model"
- Learn the sub-steps of each of the stages of the SARA model.
