This eight-hour train-the-trainer course will
provide the law enforcement officer with the techniques to engage landlords
in a coordinated problem solving partnership. The goal of such a partnership
is to prevent or reduce crime and disorder on rental property and provide
for lasting, long-term problem resolution. It includes information on
how landlords can utilize the principles of Crime Prevention through Environmental
Design (CPTED) and the critical steps in applicant screening. Information
on local records checks and the towing of vehicles from private property
will also be covered.
Participants will be able to:
- Develop a basic understanding of landlord-tenant law
- Recognize and promote the importance of proper tenant screening and
effective rental agreements when working with the individual landlord
- Discuss federal and state laws pertinent to landlords and tenants
- Learn the techniques of proper landlord training: crime prevention
through environmental design (CPTED), ongoing management, apartment
watch and warning signs of drug activity
